This story is part of Amazon Prime Day, CNET’s guide on everything you need to know and how to make sure you get the best deal.

If you’ve ever considered purchasing a dedicated e-reader, Amazon will once again get heavy discounts on some Kindle e-readers as part of Prime Day 2020, which starts Tuesday, October 13th. At $ 80, Kindle Paperwhite will have a $ 50 discount, which is $ 5 less than the previous product all the time. We think it’s going to be a particularly popular deal on Prime Day.

Prime Day is also a good time to consider the Kids’ version of Kindle for beginners; You can save $ 35 off the list price of $ 110 and also get a free case and a year of Amazon’s Kid Plus subscription service, valued at $ 36.

In addition, Amazon will provide a $ 5 credit for “any Kindle book” with the purchase of certain Kindle devices.

Like most other Prime Day sales, it is expected to begin Tuesday October 13 at 12:01 AM PDT and last for up to 48 hours. If you didn’t see the deal you were hoping for, don’t lose hope – experience has shown us that there are likely to be other Prime Day Kindle deals to come.

It’s unclear if Kindle Oasis or the basic Kindle (non-kids version) will also go on sale, but we’ll keep an eye on their pricing because Amazon often gives up previously unannounced deals (as well as a lightning deal or two) on its Prime Day devices. This is Goldilocks in the Amazon line and our current CNET Editors’ Choice in the category. Here are some of the things we love about Kindle Paperwhite:

    • It is 10% thinner and lighter than the previous version.
    • It features a “front flow” design with a back made of a softer and more holdable material instead of a hard plastic.
    • It’s Kindle is completely waterproof, like the high-end Kindle Oasis, and has a plastic screen that Amazon says is crack and scratch resistant.
    • It has Bluetooth technology built in, so you can download and listen to Amazon Audible audiobooks with wireless headphones.

Note that Amazon can update Kindle Paperwhite in 2020 (released November 2018). If and when it did, it is not clear how much to upgrade. For example, USB-C charging can be added and maybe the lighting scheme can be updated, but we don’t expect any exciting upgrades. Read our Amazon Kindle Paperwhite review (2018).

Amazon’s newest entry-level e-book reader, which Amazon simply calls the Kindle, now has a self-lit screen and an upgraded design. At $ 90, this eBook reader costs $ 10 more than its predecessor, Kindle 2016, but this Kindle regularly sells for under $ 60. We prefer the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, which has an HD display (text and images appear slightly clearer), is waterproof and has a slightly better lighting scheme. But if you don’t want to spend a lot on an e-reader, the standard Kindle is a good choice, especially when it’s on discount.

The Kids Edition on sale here includes a portfolio – there are 4 case options to choose from – along with a generic Amazon Kids Plus (FreeTime Unlimited), which typically costs $ 3 per month and gives you access to hundreds of children’s books. Amazon Kids Plus includes the full Harry Potter series, and the first book from another popular series such as Artemis Fowl.
