We understand that EB Games stores today received instructions that pre-orders for the PS5 and Xbox Series X / Xbox Series S will only take place online.
Pre-orders placed online can be delivered to the customer’s homes or picked up in the store. All online pre-orders for PS5 and Xbox Series X / Xbox Series S will require a $ 200 online deposit, and all pre-orders are limited to one order per customer.

This decision was made by EB Games to ensure all customers have a fair chance of pre-ordering the console of their choice and it also helps with social distancing. We understand that their websites have received an upgrade in anticipation of an influx of pre-orders on both devices.
It remains unclear when pre-orders for the Xbox Series X / S and PS5 will begin, but with the Xbox Series S officially announced earlier today, it appears that pre-orders for at least the Xbox Series S / X will begin live in the near future.
Personally, I think that a larger deposit is a good step as it will deter speculators. I also think the internet is the only way to go. It will allow them to easily manage inventory and make sure that people who receive an order do not miss them due to excessive demand.
