Perez frustrated during the Australian Grand Prix? 'He was not in P2, where he should have been driving'

Brian Rodriguez, March 31, 2024

Former McLaren Formula 1 mechanic Mark Priestley opined that Sergio Perez was disappointed during the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Australia and his weaknesses were exposed when Max Verstappen dropped out of the race or was unable to drive at the front.

In the podcast Science examined Priestley discusses the Red Bull race in Australia. Verstappen retired after a few laps, and then it was up to Perez to at least get solid points for Red Bull. Priestley also opined that the Mexican was unable to close the gap with the McLaren and Ferrari cars. “If you're Red Bull and you don't have Max Verstappen, what do you have? Sergio [Pérez] He wasn't in second place where he should have been. “Maybe this shows a bigger problem within Red Bull.”

Verstappen also had difficulty

Red Bull struggled all weekend, even during practice and qualifying. Priestley even saw that Verstappen was having difficulty with the RB20 over the weekend. “the above [Verstappen] He struggled too, moaned and groaned. But when he had the opportunity on Saturday during the playoffs, he did it. He set an amazing lap for the pole. They had to work for it. Perez didn't come close to Max's performance. And in the race he was miles away.”

Red Bull needs good drivers

Priestley felt that Red Bull had the luxury of not having any rivals during the race and that it would be no problem for Perez to finish second behind the dominant Verstappen without anyone complaining about it. “They created the luxury of dominating most of the circuits. It didn't matter that Perez was behind Verstappen as long as he was close to him.” Priestley believes the Mexican must perform better if Ferrari becomes Red Bull Racing's short-term rival. “If Ferrari gets close to that, it will need two drivers who perform well.”
