Google just released Android 12 on AOSP earlier today, and OnePlus is already on the train. Starting today, OxygenOS 12 is available in an open beta for the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro.

OnePlus releases Android 12 in beta

The OnePlus Android 12 update is coming soon after the Pixel phones, although it’s only in beta at the moment. Today’s release will see the phone available as an optional upgrade for anyone who wants to test out the software before its official release.

At the moment, OxygenOS 12 Open Beta is only available on two phones, OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. However, it will arrive in time on the OnePlus 9R series, OnePlus 8, OnePlus 7, OnePlus Nord, OnePlus Nord 2, and OnePlus Nord CE. The update for OnePlus 9 devices is available for download here.

When will the update come to everyone? OnePlus hasn’t given a specific timeline yet, but recent years have shown that if all goes well, we’ll likely see the update by the end of the year, possibly early November.

What’s new in OxygenOS 12?

OxygenOS 12 with Android 12 won’t bring material for you to OnePlus smartphones, but it will bring some very important design changes as Google switches to Android.

Design-wise, OnePlus says it was inspired by James Turrell’s “Light and Space” artwork. This change is clearly visible in the Zen mode and the Private Safe app.

OnePlus also introduced the “Neumorphism” home screen icon in its native app on OxygenOS 12, as well as expanding the “Bookshelf” feature to the far left of the home screen. An updated “shelf” allows for more customization of user photos and wallpapers, and also introduces support for viewing OnePlus Watch stats. OnePlus “Scout” is now also part of the global shelf after its debut in India.

In addition to these design tweaks, OnePlus is also expanding the dark mode on OxygenOS 12 with support for three different modes. Starting with this update, OnePlus smartphone owners will be able to choose between “Soft”, “Medium” and “Enhanced” dark mode options. These three options range from lighter to darker tones to suit the user’s preferences, although it is unclear whether these options work system-wide.

Updated apps in OxygenOS 12 will include Work-Life Balance 2.0 first. This updated feature will now be available in all regions and will support switching between Lifestyle and Work mode depending on the time of day, Wi-Fi or location. . Depending on the situation, some apps may be disabled or muted.

Another new app in OxygenOS 12 is Note. This simple note taking app supports text and handwriting/photos,

OxygenOS 12 will also provide an update for OnePlus game consoles. The 2.0 update will bring optional features including a floating FPS window, game filters, frame rate settings, and other tweaks from the OnePlus Nord 2 to all other OnePlus smartphones. It also includes a new sound modifier that works in games like Fortnite and PUBG.

Finally, OnePlus’ AOD Canvas feature will be updated with more improvements to the final image, adding image scaling and the ability to remove erroneous fonts.
