More than a third of British pubs are less open to save on energy costs. Some bars are closed for a few extra hours, while others are closed for a few days. Britain’s statistics agency ONS reported this on Monday.

Just like in the Netherlands, many companies in the UK also have to deal with high energy bills. So 6 per cent of bars have been closing an extra two days a week recently. Another 7 percent were closed one day a week, while 21 percent decided to stay closed for a few hours longer.

In total, 34 percent of bars decided to be open for a shorter period. They also do this because they note that many of their clients have to keep an eye on spending. Inflation plays an important role in this. Moreover, pubs suffer from an acute shortage of staff.

Bar owners expect their bars to close at a lower rate this month. This is partly due to the approaching holidays. This is often a time to visit an extra pub in the UK.

Another factor is that later this month, the FIFA World Cup will begin, for which England and Wales have qualified. This sport is very popular in the country.
