New York stock exchanges closed for Independence Day

New York stock exchanges closed for Independence Day

Jeffrey Clark, July 5, 2021

Stock exchanges in New York will remain closed on Monday due to the celebration of Independence Day in the United States last Sunday. The Fourth of July is a national holiday celebrating the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Trading on Wall Street will resume on Tuesday.

New York indexes rose to the end of the week on Friday after a better-than-expected jobs report from the US government. In addition to inflation, job growth plays an important role in the interest rate policy of the Federal Reserve, the umbrella organization for US central banks. The leading Dow Jones index closed the session 0.4 percent higher at 3,4786.35 points. The broad S&P 500 index rose 0.8 percent to a new record high at 4,352.34 points and the Nasdaq Technology Index rose 0.8 percent to 14,639.33 points.

Next week, attention will be focused on, among other things, the publication of the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting. In particular, investors will be looking for indications about a possible phase-out of support measures, while feedback on potential interest rate steps is evaluated.
