Man (40 years old) slips off walking path and is eaten by crocodile in front of his family

Man (40 years old) slips off walking path and is eaten by crocodile in front of his family

Brian Rodriguez, August 9, 2024

A tragic story from Queensland, Australia, where a family walk last Saturday turned into tragedy. Dr. Dave Hogbin, 40, slipped while hiking and ended up in a river, where he was attacked by a five-metre crocodile.

Authorities tracked down the animal a few days later and found the remains of the unfortunate Australian in its digestive tract. This is the third fatal crocodile incident this year. Police say illegal animal feeding is a likely cause of the attacks.

to leave

Hogben was walking with his wife and three young children (aged 7, 5 and 2) when he slipped on the steep bank of the Annan River. His wife tried to grab him but was in danger of being dragged away. Dave left his wife to save her and ended up in the river and was eaten by a crocodile.

slippery road

The family walked on an official path five metres above the river. Due to the rain, part of the path collapsed, causing Dave to fall. Fortunately, the children did not see their father disappear into the water, the family said.

nightmare

“We were enjoying a normal day off and everything changed in 30 seconds,” his wife said. “He did nothing wrong – in fact, he did everything right, and yet this happened. His final act was not to drag me down. I’m glad I’m still here, because it could have been a million times worse for everyone involved, not just the boys.”

illegal feeding

This is the third fatal crocodile attack in Australia this year. In April, a 16-year-old boy fell victim to a crocodile, and in July, a 12-year-old girl was mauled. Queensland authorities insist that feeding crocodiles is illegal and carries heavy fines. Videos of crocodiles being fed show just how dangerous it can be: the animals lose their natural shyness and begin to associate humans with food.

In parallel with the wolf
This problem is reminiscent of warnings in the Netherlands not to feed our wild animal, the wolf. Earlier this year, a wolf was spotted near cars in the Veluwe area, possibly looking for food. After a girl was bitten, the Utrecht Landschap newspaper published a list of tips on what to do and what not to do when you encounter a wolf, AD writes.
advice

Stay calm and keep your distance, preferably 100 metres.

Do you have a dog with you? Keep it on a leash.

Do not feed or lure the wolf.

Don't chase the wolf.

Is the wolf getting too close? Then don't run away, but slowly back away, speaking loudly and making big gestures.
