Frankie enters million dollar baby A boxing gym in a poor neighborhood. Maggie, a waitress from a poor family, wants to become a boxing champion. Frankie refuses to train her.

Dutch boxing and kickboxing champion Lucia Rijker plays world champion Billy in the film. This wasn't her only production job: she also prepared Hilary Swank for the intense boxing scenes during filming.
