High temperatures and little snow in the Alps: “But there is hope”

High temperatures and little snow in the Alps: “But there is hope”

Brian Rodriguez, February 12, 2024

The weather this week can best be described as changeable. A mix of sun, clouds, rain and snow can be expected. De Jong says: Large amounts of snow fell last weekend.

In eastern Switzerland and France, the weather looks set to remain dry in the coming days, with room for sunshine every now and then. He added: “Tomorrow the weather will be mainly freezing in the Alps in the morning, so it is recommended to take to the slopes early.”

De Jong says this week will be disappointing in terms of snowfall. “There's not much up to about 1,200 metres. If you go a little higher to 1,500 metres, it's colored white.” Temperatures will also rise slowly for the rest of the week, so the maximum of 0 degrees is usually above 2000 metres. “Temperatures remain high for this time of year.”

Green slopes

The snow that falls will not last long due to the rain, resulting in green slopes. On Thursday, the temperature will rise to about 10 to 11 degrees in the Alps. From the weekend onwards, there will be more rain and snow and temperatures appear to be dropping again. “This is still uncertain, but in the longer term conditions appear to be improving and there is hope for a better snow situation.”

The fact that February has been a weak month so far can also be seen in the Netherlands. Next Thursday, the temperature may reach 14 to 15 degrees here locally. Sometimes the sun will shine, but it will probably rain too.

“Where normally the temperature should be around 7 degrees during the day, the temperature is now very moderate. Sometimes the temperature at nights reaches 10 degrees, when it should be just above zero.” This means that there also seems to be little possibility of real winter weather here in the Netherlands.
