Elon Musk's Neuralink mind reader has been put into humans for the first time | Technique

Jeffrey Clark, January 30, 2024
The Neuralink mind reader has been implanted in a human for the first time. It happened on Sunday and the person involved is recovering well, according to Neuralink CEO Elon Musk X.

Neuralink has developed a brain implant that allows the brain to communicate directly with a computer. The mind reader should enable paralyzed people to move their muscles again. The company also wants to restore sight to blind people. Even in people who were born blind, this should be possible, according to Neuralink.

Last summer, it became clear that the company could test the implants on people. This has now happened for the first time. Musk describes the results so far as promising. Doesn't share more information.

The company's brain chip has already been tested on thousands of animals in recent years. During an experiment on a monkey, the animal was able to play the fifty-year-old game Pong Playing through his thoughts. The mind reader recorded the monkey's brain activity and translated it into the movement of the board to bounce the ball.

The animal tests the company conducted to develop the implants have also drawn criticism. Perhaps too many animals died during the evolution of mind readers.
