EBI dangerous criminals are allowed to contact and receive visitors to a lesser extent

The system at Vught’s Extra Secure Institution (EBI) has become even stricter. Dangerous criminals like Redouane Taghi are only allowed to receive one visitor per week and call for 10 minutes once a week. So far, they have been allowed to receive three visitors and call three times for ten minutes.

Ministers Weerwind (Legal Protection) and Yesilgöz (Justice) want to prevent prisoners from continuing their criminal activities through contacts in the outside world. The new rules will come into effect as soon as possible.

The current regulations are insufficient, according to the ministers. It recently emerged that Taghe had written letters to fellow prisoner Muhammad B, who was convicted of murdering film director Theo van Gogh. Justice takes into account the presence of hidden messages in the messages.

Taghi’s lawyer at the time, his nephew, was also arrested because he was going to act as a conduit for assignments to his associates outside of prison.

From now on, the imposition of restrictions on detainees will be the direct responsibility of Minister Weyerwind. “With this, I want to prevent prison staff from becoming a target for criminals who put pressure to lift restrictions,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, he is urgently working to change the law to impose more restrictions on the most dangerous criminals. For example, it should be possible to completely block certain communications and forms of communication by these detainees.

He also wants to create the possibility of visual surveillance of conversations between some inmates and their lawyers. Now these conversations are always confidential. This is also regulated by law. Weyerwind wants to send the amendment to the House of Representatives early next year.
