As one of the major manufacturers of corrugated packaging and cardboard, DS Smith is investing more than € 115 million in its new research, development and innovation program. The group is doubling its research and development expenditures to accelerate its recycling strategy.

The five-year investment plan is in line with the DS Smith Group’s sustainable development strategy, launched in 2020. This includes establishing a new technology center in the United Kingdom, developing new materials and a pilot project that measures e-commerce packaging resistance to a variety of impacts.

DS Smith wants to offer customers 100 percent recyclable packaging starting this year and replace 1 billion plastic items used in supermarkets and e-commerce by 2025. To this end, DS Smith is, among other things, developing transparent packaging. New and completely recyclable to replace plastic films in food packaging.

The paper manufacturer is also aiming for a virus-resistant coating for its laminate. A new R&D center under construction in the UK will also produce prototypes and serve as a test center for developing new and innovative technologies. This unit, dubbed “Unit 17”, will work with the Group’s 50 innovation centers and R&D partners.
