Two 65-year-olds from Salzburg have fallen victim to an online scam related to cryptocurrencies. (icon image)

Two 65-year-old men from Salzburg separately lost more than €80,000 in an online scam involving cryptocurrencies. Salzburg police announced on Easter Sunday that a dividend promised by a supposed financial company had never taken place.

A 65-year-old man from Salzburg and a Salzburg woman of the same age have fallen victim to previously unknown scammers. The two victims independently made investments in an alleged financial company based in Great Britain between July and October 2023. Police announced this on Easter Sunday.

Scammers with access to your crypto wallet

The two 65-year-olds were previously contacted via a social media platform and asked strangers to conduct transactions from their cryptocurrency wallets using remote maintenance software.

However, the promised dividends were never distributed. According to police, both victims transferred more than 80,000 euros each.
