Browser extensions are often a gateway for malware. Chrome is now better protecting against this.

no time? Blue News sums it up for you

  • Until now, users weren’t sure that there was malware hidden in their Chrome extensions.
  • However, as of the next release, you will be warned by a security check.
  • With a little trick, the protection can now be activated.

In the future, users of the Google Chrome browser will be warned if an extension they have installed is removed from the Chrome Web Store. This removal often occurs due to the detection of malware in the extension.

Until now, users remained completely unaware that malware had infiltrated their browser. Malicious browser extensions are a big problem because they allow attackers to intercept a lot of sensitive data.

Use protection now

This will soon change. A new security check will now proactively notify users as soon as malware is detected in an extension. This check is active by default from the next Chrome version 117, but it can already be used with a little trick in the current Chrome version 116.

To do this, you have to enter “chrome://flags/#safety-check-extensions” in the address bar and press Enter. Now the Safety Check Plugins Module is highlighted in yellow. In the drop-down menu next to it, the security scan can then be turned on with “Enabled”. After restarting the browser, this can be found in Settings under Privacy and Security.
