Hyundai robotics company Boston Dynamics has been working on the Atlas hydraulic robot for nearly a decade. It is now retired and making way for a new model. Boston Dynamics says goodbye to its flagship through a video. It shows the successes and (especially) failures of Atlas.

Atlas has been repeatedly “tortured” over the years, whether by intentionally pushing him or causing accidents. This made it possible to develop the robot further and teach it impressive, sometimes even acrobatic, skills. This means the robot can jump unexpectedly high and even do somersaults.

    Atlas development: a “bloody” affair.

The video sparked a kind of emotional sympathy among many YouTube users, as evidenced by the comments. Atlas appears very human, not only because of his human form, but also in his behavior during incidents. The video shows a fall in which Atlas hits his (non-existent) genitals. Then he puts his hands on his thighs and curls up on the floor as if writhing in pain. In other falls, the robot has been seen leaking hydraulic fluid, which appears to be bleeding. (LZO)
