Beijing 2022 | Jamaica again with four men in the Games for the first time this century

Beijing 2022 | Jamaica again with four men in the Games for the first time this century

Michael McCann, January 18, 2022

Jamaica has yet to officially announce the athletes who will represent the country in the four-man pop championship, but pilot Shanwyn Stevens is expected to attend the same three men who have made up his team all season. Along with Rolando Reed, Ashley Watson and Matthew Wikeby, Stevens has been the Jamaican side this season to narrowly advance based on international results.

A Jamaican four-man bobsled team immediately reminds many people of the 1993 movie “Running is Great.” The film tells the story of the Jamaican bobsled team at the Calgary Olympics. It happened in 1988 and for the first time Jamaica qualified to participate in the Winter Olympics.

Jamaica’s yellow-and-green community sled was a Calgary highlight. Jamaica was an unexpected entrant due to its tropical climate and so the team could count on a lot of sympathy from European and American fans. The four guys had almost no experience and had to ask other teams for some materials. Unfortunately, the team didn’t make it official on the results sheet, as the quartet crashed in the last race and never officially crossed the finish line.

Five years later, Disney decided to build a comedy on this adventure. Although a great deal of imagination is added to the story, the inspiration for the movie is clear. The movie is still seen as a classic, and with a new Jamaican four-man pop in the games, the cult movie will undoubtedly attract attention once again.

In addition to four-man pop, Jamaican men have also positioned themselves in two-man pop. In the women’s monopop, Jasmine Finnator-Victorian will represent Jamaica. Fenlator-Victorian was still active for the United States in the four-man pop during the Olympic Games in Sochi. However, in 2016 she decided that she wanted to represent her father’s native country in the future and did so already in 2018 in Pyeongchang in the two-woman bobsleigh.

This makes Jamaica’s largest ever bobsleigh delegation at the Olympics.
