Adidas made the Netherlands play with a completely different ball than before in the semi-final

Adidas made the Netherlands play with a completely different ball than before in the semi-final

Brian Rodriguez, July 7, 2024

UEFA, in collaboration with adidas, chose to play the semi-finals and final of the European Championship with a different ball. From the group stage to the quarter-finals, a coloured ball, the adidas Fussballliebe, was played with, but from the semi-finals onwards, the Fussballliebe Final rolled onto the pitches.

The new ball was delivered on Sunday afternoon, and will be used by the Netherlands, England, France and Spain in the final stage of the tournament. Spain also trained with the Fussballliebe final to test it.

The previously used ball has a white background color and contains some elongated triangles. The triangles are a combination of black with a lighter and brighter color, such as orange, yellow and green.

In the semi-finals and the final battle, the organization chooses to play with a different ball. The bright colors disappear and are replaced by the colors of the German flag: black, red and yellow.

Furthermore, the majority of the ball is not white, but silver. Silver represents the color of the trophy that the winner of the tournament will hold aloft. The new ball also features the most advanced “Connected Ball Technology”. This provides fans, referees and coaches with more accurate data during matches.

Adidas previously stated that “the Fussballliebe is made from recycled polyester, water-based ink and various organic products such as corn fibre, sugarcane and wood pulp”. The Fussballliebe is equipped with what is called “connected ball technology”. Using this technology, data about the player's position is sent directly to the VAR.

“Connected ball technology contributes to UEFA’s semi-automated offside technology and therefore plays an important role in supporting faster match decisions.”
