It is very likely that the past eight years have been the warmest on record. This was reported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Monday at the start of the Climate Summit in Egypt. A shocking report from the United Nations shows that the climate is deteriorating on several fronts.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the average temperature in 2022 will be about 1.15 degrees higher than the pre-industrial era. That’s while the weather phenomenon La Niña kept temperatures lower than they would have been.

Simply put, in the eastern Pacific, sea temperature decreases around the equator. The Gulf Stream can disrupt the climate. Extreme temperature deviations can lead to a less warm year.

WMO President Petteri Taalas says the climate goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees is “barely achievable”. It refers, among other things, to greenhouse gas emissions that have reached a record level this year. “It’s already too late for many glaciers, and sea-level rise threatens millions of people.”

The WMO report is full of disturbing conclusions

A World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report shows that sea level is rising twice as fast as it was thirty years ago. Plus, the oceans are getting warmer than ever. Millions of people have already been affected by extreme heat waves, droughts and floods this year. Thousands of them died.

Nature itself is also severely degraded. For example, a record amount of the surface of the Alpine glaciers has disappeared. East Africa has the driest season in more than forty years. “The damage done to our land is almost irreparable,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

At the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Summit, damage from climate change was on the agenda for the first time. The summit will also address tackling climate change and adapting to the inevitable global warming. Over the next two weeks, many administrators will come to Egypt to talk about climate problems.
