United Airlines is preparing for the largest international network expansion in its history, with plans to add 10 destinations across Europe and Asia in 2027 while deploying its new Airbus A321XLR aircraft on several long-range routes.
The Chicago-based carrier will introduce flights from Newark Liberty International Airport, San Francisco International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. The new destinations are Okinawa, Luxembourg City, Toulouse, Marseille, Ibiza, Valencia, Terceira, Ljubljana, Olbia and Catania.
Service to the new markets is expected to begin as early as March 2027. All announced routes remain subject to government approval.
United Expands Its International Footprint
United said eight of the 10 destinations currently have no nonstop service from another U.S. airline. The carrier expects to become the only U.S. airline offering nonstop flights from the United States to Okinawa, Luxembourg City, Toulouse, Ljubljana, Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille and Terceira.
The expansion will give travelers additional direct access to France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Luxembourg and Japan. It also strengthens United’s position in Mediterranean leisure markets and smaller European cities that have limited nonstop connectivity with the United States.
United has expanded rapidly outside the domestic market over the past decade. Since 2017, the airline has added 58 international destinations and now serves more than 160 destinations outside the United States.
The company said the broader network is designed to serve a combination of leisure travelers, corporate customers and passengers visiting friends and relatives.
Additional Routes From Major U.S. Hubs
Alongside the 10 new destinations, United will expand service to several established international markets.
The carrier will begin daily flights from Los Angeles International Airport to Osaka, Japan, on March 27. United said the service will make it the only airline connecting Osaka with two cities in the continental United States, supplementing its existing operations from San Francisco and Guam.
From Washington Dulles, United plans to launch three weekly flights to Milan beginning May 28. According to the airline, it will be the only carrier operating nonstop service between the Washington, D.C., region and Milan.
United will also introduce daily nonstop flights between Denver International Airport and Paris starting May 27. The service will complement the airline’s existing Paris routes from Newark, Washington Dulles, Chicago and San Francisco.
In another international restoration, United plans to resume service between San Francisco and Tel Aviv on March 28. The route will operate three times per week and, according to the carrier, provide more business-class seats between the two cities than any competing airline.
Several destinations introduced for summer 2026 will return in summer 2027. Those seasonal services include Newark flights to Split, Croatia; Bari, Italy; Glasgow, Scotland; and Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Airbus A321XLR Supports Long-Range Growth
United’s new Airbus A321XLR will play a central role in the expansion. The long-range, single-aisle aircraft will operate Newark routes to Luxembourg, Ibiza, Valencia and Marseille, along with service between Washington Dulles and Toulouse.
United is configuring the aircraft with 32 premium seats, including 20 United Polaris suites and 12 United Premium Plus seats. That total is 16 premium seats higher than the number available on the airline’s Boeing 757-200 aircraft.
The Polaris suites will include privacy doors. Other onboard features will include complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, 4K OLED seatback displays with Bluetooth connectivity and a snack bar in the economy cabin.
United will also introduce a new Economy Plus arrangement designed to provide passengers with more elbow room and access to a shared table positioned across an open middle seat. The airline expects to be the only major U.S. carrier offering that seating configuration.
International A321XLR Flights Begin in December
The A321XLR is scheduled to enter United’s domestic operation on selected routes in September 2026. International service is expected to begin December 1 with flights from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin.
Tickets for the first international A321XLR services are scheduled to go on sale August 27.
The broader expansion reinforces Newark’s role as a major transatlantic gateway while extending United’s reach across Europe and Asia. The airline said the additions will allow it to serve more destinations in Japan, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France than any other U.S. carrier, further differentiating its international network from domestic competitors.
