Slight growth in viewing numbers for the Indy 500 on Ziggo Sport

Slight growth in viewing numbers for the Indy 500 on Ziggo Sport

Richard Powell, December 29, 2023

It is noteworthy that many viewers continued to follow the race. While last year – partly due to the early cancellation of Rinus VeeKay – an average of 63,000 viewers watched, this past weekend was exactly double that number at 126,000 viewers. In the final stage of the race, the average number of viewers rose to 144 thousand viewers.

Working at the Indy 500Since the Formula 1 race in Monaco was not long overdue and the Ziggo Sport editorial team was in no hurry to switch to the Indy 500 when reviewing this race, this year's race also saw an extensive preview. This attracted a total of 206,000 viewers, while the follow-up attracted 124,000 viewers.

Just like last year, Rick Winkelman was present at the race on TV. A positive development was that Winkelmann not only interviewed the Dutch on the track this year, but also introduced the Dutch public to other notable figures on the IndyCar circuit. For example, interviews with Mario Andretti, Alex Palou, Scott Dixon and McLaren team boss Zak Brown have been broadcast or made available online. Viewing figures are still well below those for the 2021 Indy 500, when Ziggo Sport attracted a wider range of motorsport fans thanks to its live broadcast of the Formula 1 race. In 2021, the Indy 500 attracted a total of 734,000 viewers.

Disclaimer: The viewing figures above only use available information. Viewing figures have been announced for ZiggoSport Select and the open channel, but this is not the case for Ziggo Sport Racing (where the US preview was broadcast). These viewing figures cannot be included in this story.

The viewing figures for Ziggo Sport Select and the open channel are also added together to get the totals. It is possible that the same viewers watched both channels – this was not taken into account.

However, comparisons with previous years are relevant, as viewing figures are treated the same way every year.
