The world number one won the bronze medal in Beijing in 2008 and was unable to improve on this performance in his next three attempts. “The Games are one of the most important events in sports. You’re also representing your country, and it feels like a great honor to be able to participate,” Djokovic explained.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion expects a busy and difficult year. He added, “We will play first at Roland Garros on clay courts, then Wimbledon on grass courts, then the games again on clay courts, then the US Open on hard courts. This will be difficult for us as players.”
The 36-year-old Serbian returns to Valencia, Spain for the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals, four days after winning the US Open, his third Grand Slam title this year. “Logistically, I don’t feel fresh after so many matches. But this feels like a good burnout because of my success in the United States.”
Djokovic will face host country Spain and Serbia on Friday in Valencia, where world number two Carlos Alcaraz will be absent. The Czech Republic is the final opponent on Saturday.
