Mike Vobben improved the Dutch record for 5000 metres. The athlete from Nijmegen achieved a time of 13.05.66 at the Athletics Night in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium.
This is well short of his old record time of 13:13.06, which he set in Monaco in 2020. He shared the previous record with Camille Maas, who also ran 13.13.06 in Berlin in 2002.
Vauben qualified with his time for the World Championships in Budapest in August, but narrowly missed the 5,000m limit at the Paris Olympics, which was 13.05.00. His first reaction was: “I have mixed feelings, because I miss the maximum direct qualification for the Olympic Games.”
Foppen did not win the match. He placed sixth in a strong international field. Kenyan Cornelius Kemboi won the race in 13:03.49.
