This is the fourth victory in the tournament this season for the 36-year-old Serbian. Earlier this year, he won in Adelaide and, by winning the Australian Open and Roland Garros, brought 22 titles and 23 Grand Slams to his palms, which now boast a total of 95 titles.

Djokovic escaped a match point in the second set tiebreak. She also fell behind by a break in the second set. strange. Honestly, I don’t know what else to say. This match is hard to describe. It was definitely one of the toughest matches I’ve ever played in my life, regardless of tournament, class, level, against any player. said Djokovic.

Djokovic then gleefully tore his shirt. “All in all it was one of the toughest and most exciting matches I have ever been in and these are the moments and matches that I keep working on day in and day out. I have never doubted that I can give my best in tennis when it really matters and I am so happy.

“The feeling I’m getting on court now reminds me a bit of when I faced Nadal when we were at our peak,” said Djokovic. “Every point is a battle. You have to win every point, every shot, no matter the conditions. It’s great to be able to experience that with him.”

He won for the third time

At Cincinnati, his name appeared on the honor roll for the third time. He also won the Ohio Hard Court Championships in 2018 and 2020. Prior to that, he was a loser there five times, three times against Roger Federer and twice against Andy Murray.

The Cincinnati Masters is the last preparatory tournament for the US Open for the senior players. The last major tournament of the year starts in a week. Last year Alcaraz triumphed in New York. Then Djokovic was not allowed to enter the United States because he had not been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

In duels between the two best players of the moment, it is now even: 2-2. Last year Alcaraz won the semifinals of the clay court tournament in Madrid and this year the Wimbledon final. At Roland Garros, Djokovic kept the young Spaniard out of the final.

Biggest job title

Earlier in the day, Coco Gauff claimed the biggest title of her career in Cincinnati. The 19-year-old American defeated Czech Karolina Moshova (26), 6-3, 6-4, in the final.

Gauff, a finalist at Roland Garros last year, has been playing top tennis for several years now, even though she’s still a teenager. She is ranked seventh in the world and has four titles so far this week. However, Grand Slam titles or eventual victories in WTA 1000 tournaments are still missing from her rest until Sunday.

Gauff ended it after 1 hour and 56 minutes on her fourth match point. The duel in the heat — in Cincinnati it was over 35 degrees Celsius — ended in a love game. At 5-2 three match points were left unused. Muchova, ranked 17th in the world, narrowly finished the match.

In the semifinals, Gauff defeated Poland’s Iga Swiatek. The American has not overtaken the world number 1 in seven matches.
