National team coach Wegman feels the support from around the world for the World Cup final

National team coach Wegman feels the support from around the world for the World Cup final

Richard Powell, August 19, 2023

National coach Sarina Wegman feels her England players are ready for Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain. “Everyone is fit,” she said at a closing press conference in Sydney. “We want to play our best game in the tournament.”

Wegman has been enjoying the positive attention her team has received in recent weeks during the World Cups in Australia and New Zealand. It’s hard to imagine a better advertising campaign for women’s football in England. “It’s really incredible,” she said. “We feel the support from England. But also from other parts of the world. This is what we dreamed of.”

Not only English footballers receive a lot of praise. Wiegmann is the national coach for the second time in a World Cup final, after a losing battle with the Dutch national team against the United States. She also led Orange and England to a European title. Coaches Pep Guardiola and Erik ten Hag from Manchester City and Manchester United were impressed with the 53-year-old from The Hague. In England, they do not exclude that one day she will become the national coach of the men’s team.

Wegman did not want to talk about her future during her press conference. I repeated the question “Do I want to become the coach of the men’s national team.” “I have nothing to say about that now. Let’s talk about the final against Spain.”

England defeated Australia in the semi-finals (3-1). Spain settled with Sweden (2-1) and was very strong for the Orange (2-1) in the quarter-finals. National coach Jorge Vilda is doing an excellent job with his team at the moment. This is very remarkable, because he left so many good players at home because they criticized him.

Fifteen notable international players sent an email to the RFEF last year. The players were unhappy with Vilda’s Spartan style. Among other things, they had to keep the door to their hotel rooms open at night. According to the football players, the national coach wanted to check if they were in bed. The conflict has escalated to the point where Patri Guijaro, Maby Leon, Sandra Panos, and Aitana Bonmati miss the World Cup. He also skipped Manchester United’s Una Batley, Lucia Garcia, Manchester City’s Laila Wahbi and Laya Alexandri.

Vilda is also unpopular with many of the players he has taken to the World Cup. In his press conference he was asked if he did not feel guilty that many good Spanish footballers are missing from the World Cup. He replied, “We just want to be the best team in the world.” “That is why we will win the final.”
