Logan Sargeant has confirmed his position as Williams Formula 1 driver for 2023 after finishing fourth in the Formula 2 standings. The American needed to collect points in order to be able to compete in the top division next season.
The American was announced over the weekend of the United States Grand Prix as Alexander Albon’s teammate for 2023, but with the caveat that he has yet to score the points needed to secure his FIA lead. But some good performances in Abu Dhabi secured the American a starting ticket to the Formula 1 race. With a fifth place in Sunday’s race, he finished the season fourth in the standings.

This score alone earned him thirty points, taking him to over forty points, the minimum required today to participate in Formula 1 and obtain the licence. To reduce the driver’s job, Williams ran Sargent in free practice sessions in the United States, Brazil and Abu Dhabi, each of which added a point to his resume. The 21-year-old is now the first American to race in Formula 1 since Alexander Rossi drove five races for Manor Marussia in 2015.
