ModernizationShane Hammink’s basketball career came to an abrupt end. The 28-year-old national guard of champions Den Bosch has ended his career after the upcoming European Championship, in which he is still participating with Orange.
Hammink’s decision did not come entirely out of thin air. The 1.98-meter basketball player doubted for some time whether he wanted to continue his sport. In the end, Hammink came to the conclusion that he “no longer had the absolute motivation” to exercise excellent.
Hammink’s contract with Heroes remains until the end of this season, but that contract will now be dissolved. The goalkeeper is still participating in the European Championship, which begins this weekend. With the Orange team, he will play with Serbia in the first group match against Serbia in the Czech capital, Prague, on Friday.

Hammink then leaves the Netherlands and returns to the United States where he was born 28 years ago in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father, Geert Hammink, who is currently a coach at Fraport Skyliners in Germany, played in the NBA at the time.
Shane Hammink started his professional basketball career in Spain in 2017 with Bilbao Basketball. A year later he moved to Donar Groningen, where he played two seasons. In 2018, he won the Dutch Super Cup with Donnar.
Then Hammink played with Yost United and Belgian Spiro Charleroi. A year ago he signed with Heroes. He won the National Championship with Team Bossche this spring.

“It’s great that I succeeded, so I was able to finish my club career in a great way. Of course I hope to do that in my international career in the European Championship from Friday. Then I will go back to America and focus on the next stage of my life,” said Hamminck. I’m really looking forward to it.”

He says the player has no fixed plan for what to do next. “First, travel a bit and enjoy life. Then we will see. My life has been around basketball for eighteen years. I want something different now.”
Will he return to basketball? Hammink says he doesn’t know. Maybe I will come back later and go back to the Champions or to the Eredivisie. Maybe not. We can see that.”
Hammink has played thirty international matches with Orange so far. So there could be more in the next European Championship.
