The two-time world champion in the 200 meters missed the world championships in Eugene last month, but the 30-year-old sprinter qualified for the European Championships in the 100 metres. Schippers consider this a “gap year” in which they focus on the 100m and ignore the 200m. Her best time of the season is 11.13 seconds, three-tenths more than her Dutch record (10.81).

The Dutch national team for the European Championship consists of no less than 61 athletes: 34 women and 27 men. Notable among them are Vimick Paul, Leekki Claver, William Marvin Bonifacia, Nadine Visser, Jessica Schilder and Ninky Brinkman. Anouk Vetter and Emma Ostrogel, who won silver and bronze respectively in the heptathlon at last year’s Tokyo Olympics, are running in Munich.

Witter also took home the silver at the World Cup last month, improving her record in the Netherlands to 6,867 points. It was not certain if the all-around star would also feature in the European Championships, but Vetter is part of the squad introduced by head coach Ad Roskam on Wednesday.

The Netherlands won four medals at the World Cup in the United States. In addition to Vetter, the FIMK Ball (400m hurdles) and the mixed relay team in the 4x400m took the silver. The painter won a bronze medal in the throw.

With Brinkmann, the Netherlands took home a candidate’s medal in the marathon in Munich. The 28-year-old runner finished second at the Rotterdam Marathon in April. With a 2.22.51, it dived for about a minute below the record of nineteen-year-old Dutchman Lorna Kiplagat.

Munich will host a multi-European Championship from August 11-21. Besides athletics, the program includes cycling (road, track, mountain bike and BMX), beach volleyball, gymnastics, rowing, table tennis, triathlon, canoe racing and sports climbing. Athletics competitions are held at the Olympics.
