Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge won the Tokyo Marathon in the fourth fastest time ever. Kipchoge, 37, stayed in the Japanese capital with an average score of 2.02.40, just above his world record (2.01.39).
World record holder Brigid Kosgei also won the women’s race. The 28-year-old Kenyan won with a time of 2.16.02, almost two minutes more than her world record (2.14.04).
Kipchoge first participated in the Tokyo Marathon. Last year, the Kenyan extended his Olympic title at the Tokyo Games in the 42.195-kilometre classic, but it was then staged in Sapporo.
The Tokyo Marathon is one of the six major marathons. Kipchoge has won four times: London four times, Berlin three times, Chicago and Tokyo once. The Boston and New York marathons are still missing from the list of honors for Kenya, who now has three of the four best marathons ever to run. Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele is second in the all-time standings with 2.01.41.
