Williams says he doesn’t expect any major problems on the high-altitude circuits in Mexico and Brazil. Historically, the Mercedes engine has struggled at high altitudes, while the Honda engine in combination with the Red Bull race car have proven to be a solid combination. Dave Robson, head of vehicle performance at Williams, says the team isn’t too concerned at this point.

While Mercedes’ engines have had some reliability issues lately and haven’t historically done particularly well at higher altitudes, Williams doesn’t anticipate any issues at altitude at Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Williams has been plagued by problems with the Mercedes power unit over the past few weekends, forcing the team to take penalties in the past four races. Aston Martin, which is also a Mercedes customer team, also took the grid penalty at the US Grand Prix for an engine change.

Don’t worry at Williams about Mercedes’ power supply

The next two races will be held at 2,285 and 800 meters above sea level, respectively. In thin air, components like the turbo or the MGU-H have to work harder. However, according to Robson, this should not be a problem.

“At the moment we are not worried yet”, He says Motorsport-Total.com. “I don’t think altitude is going to be a huge issue for reliability. It’s going to be fine, there are no major concerns at the moment.”
