VideoThe military government dismissed Myanmar’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. British authorities said after official notice from Myanmar that Kyaw Zwar-min should leave his post in London early because he supports Aung San Suu Kyi’s ousted government rather than the junta.

The diplomat announced on Wednesday evening that he was no longer allowed to enter the embassy because he did not support the army’s coup in early February. He spent the night in his car. British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said he condemned the junta’s “bullying behaviour”.

According to informed sources, the second man in the embassy and the military attache closed the ambassador and took over the diplomatic representation on behalf of the military rulers. “It’s kind of a coup in the heart of London,” said Kyaw Zwar Main.

Myanmar’s military launched a coup on 1 February after Aung San Suu Kyi’s pro-democracy party won the elections in November. The military arrested members of the civilian government and accused Aung San Suu Kyi and her party of rigging the elections.

The ambassador broke with the junta in recent weeks and called for Aung San Suu Kyi’s release. British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab praised his bravery.

Kyaw Zwar Min is not the first Myanmar diplomat to clash with the junta. UN Ambassador Kyaw Mo Tun also spoke out against the military coup. And demanded the imposition of international sanctions on the military regime. When the military wanted to replace him, Kyaw Moe Tun refused to relinquish his position, claiming to represent Myanmar’s democratically elected government.
