The Dutch show jumpers did not win a medal in the Nations Cup at the Olympic Games. National coach Rob Earns of Vert finished fourth with 17 penalty points.
Show jumpers qualified for the final with ten nations in the last minute. Everyone started from scratch again.

Erins, in consultation with his riders, decided to replace Willem Greve (Zebria S) in the final with Harry Smulders. The 41-year-old from Brabant, who went to Japan as a reserve, jumped with Bingo du Parc and stayed behind at the time. Thus Smolders secured the Orange team’s rise to fifth in the standings, after Mark Houtzager with Dante as the starting set dropped two columns and exceeded the time limit (9 penalty points).

France seemed to win the gold in Tokyo after two clear rounds and only two penalty points for time violations. However, things went wrong for the last contestant, Penelope Librevost. Her horse Vancouver de Lanlor first abstained and then refused to continue, costing France a medal.

Sweden and the United States both finished with eight penalties, which required a jump. In this, the combinations of both countries remained clear.
