American Caeleb Dressel became the king of the Olympic swimming championship. Dressel, 24, took five medals, all gold, at the Tokyo Aquatics Center. He finished the games with the US relay team with a world record win in the 4×100-meter medley: 3.26.28. Dressel has previously won gold in the 50 and 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 4×100 freestyle races.
Dressel, who took care of the butterfly, teamed up with Ryan Murphy (back), Michael Andrew (school) and Zach Apple (freestyle). Halfway through the race, the Americans finished third, but Dressel led the team and Apple completed it.
The Brits, including Adam Petty and Duncan Scott, took the silver with a time of 3.27.51. Bronze went to Italy (3.29.17). And in the women’s race, Australia, with a record of 3.51.60, was victorious, Kylie McKeon, Chelsea Hodges, Emma McKeon and Kate Campbell. The Australians defeated the United States (silver) and Canada (bronze).
McKeown, 27, can call herself the Queen of the Swimming Championships with seven medals. She took gold in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle, 4×100 freestyle and 4×100 change. She also won bronze in the 100 butterfly class, 4×200 freestyle and 4×100 mixed change. Mackie equaled the performances of Michael Phelps, Mark Spitz and Matt Biondi, who also took seven medals in one session. “It feels surreal, I’m so proud of myself,” said the Australian.
The Dutch swimming team will collect two medals from Tokyo won by Arno Kamenga in the breaststroke (100 and 200 metres).
