Hundreds of Britons took to the streets for the third night in a row out of outrage over the killing of 33-year-old Sarah Everard and government plans to curtail the right to protest.
A London police officer has been charged with murder. Wayne Cousins, 48, appeared in court for the second time on Tuesday. He was charged with the kidnapping and murder of the woman.
Police are also under fire for the crackdown at Sarah Everard’s vigil. According to the police force, measures have been taken to enforce the distance rules.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was unhappy with the brutal crackdown in which four women were arrested. In subsequent protests, the police have been more cautious.
Slogans
More than 600 protesters gathered in front of the British Parliament on Tuesday evening. Demonstrations were also held at the police headquarters. Participants chanted slogans like “All policemen are bastards” and rammed belts at the station. Protesters in Parliament demanded the resignation of Police Chief Cressida Dick and Interior Minister Priti Patel.
Meanwhile, Parliament has partially approved a bill by Minister Patil that would facilitate a ban on demonstrations that could lead to major disturbances in the peace. Protests were directed against this law. The demonstrators carried banners reading “Kill the bill (Delete the law).
