Gold, along with silver, is the only form of real money. At least, that’s what some experts say. Although you do not come across the precious metal on the street every day, there are countries in Europe where you can find gold in nature.

Gold is also present in the soil in the Netherlands. In the last century we had a gold mine in Overijssel, called Erica. However, the soil was not rich enough in precious metals to make mining profitable.

Five European countries where you can find gold

However, there are countries in Europe where you have a relatively high chance of finding gold. To find the precious metal, you can use a metal detector on the road or near a river to sort out heavy gold nuggets from lighter soil particles.

1. Romania (the gold country in Europe)

Romania has the largest gold reserves in Europe. So there is an active search for the precious metal by many hobbyists.

They are usually found along a river or stream. These streams of water often carry bits of precious metal with them. This is where you have the best chance of finding a larger piece.

2. Bulgaria

The second golden country in Europe is Bulgaria. Here, too, prospectors with a saucer in their hands can be found along streams.

If you want to know where to look for gold, look for the so-called “gold plans”. You can find it online in various forums.

3. Switzerland

You also have a relatively high chance of finding gold in Switzerland, although it is less common here than in Romania and Bulgaria. If you want a successful search, it is better to search with a metal detector.

4. Spain

Spain is also best for metal detectors. There are also very few places here where there is a lot of gold.

5. Lapland

In fairytale Lapland – in the north of Finland – there are many places where you can find the precious metal. It is also recommended to go out with a metal detector. Don’t try your luck here just by looking for the precious metal. If you go in time, there is also a chance that you will spot the aurora borealis. This is perhaps more impressive than a nugget of gold.
