ANA 787 flights affected by engine corrosion issue

An All Nippon Airways (ANA) Boeing 787 Dreamliner passenger jet was forced to return to Tokyo's Haneda Airport, after one of its engine failed shortly after take off.

The Flight 241 bound to Fukuoka landed back without incidents on Thursday, in the latest string of incidents caused by the Rolls Royce engine.

ANA had earlier discovered corrosion on the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engine's turbine blades.

The issue came to light when ANA investigated the cause of a in-flight engine overheating by a Dreamliner in February. The temperature of the right engine exhaust of the aircraft was unusually high which forced the jet to return to the Kuala Lampur airport in Malaysia.

The airline said it had encountered the turbine corrosion issue three times since February.

Nine domestic flights were canceled on Friday, with further cancellations likely in the coming weeks as the fleet will be checked and repaired.

Earlier in 2012, the gearbox of the Trent 1000 engine have encountered corrosion issue, which was quickly resolved.

ANA is the largest operator of Boeing's flapship widebody passenger jet which first entered service with the airline in 2011. It took delivery of 50 th Dreamliner on August 17.

The Dreamliner had a difficult introduction as aircraft featured many advanced features like Li-Ion batteries and the all-electric architecture.

Global fleet of Dreamliners were grounded in 2013 following a battery fire incident, which was later fixed.

The Rolls Royce competes with General Electric to supply engines for the 787, with the latters GEnx-1B engine selected by 60 percent of the Dreamliner operators. The GE engine also had issues like cracking which has been rectified.
