Airbus Military has delivered the first winglet equipped C295 medium transport airlifter, dubbed the C295W to Mexican Navy.

HondaJet achieve FAA provisional certificate

The new Honda HondaJet light business jet has received provisional type certification (PTC) from the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The certificate is FAA's approval of the HondaJet design based on certification testing, design reviews, and analyses completed to date.

A provisional type certificate is a design approval by the FAA and is common for business jets when final certification is near. Honda Aircraft has demonstrated that the HondaJet is safe for flight and meets the airworthiness standards defined by the PTC.

Melvin Taylor, manager of the FAA's Atlanta Aircraft Certification Office (ACO), said: "It is a pleasure for the Atlanta ACO to issue Honda Aircraft Company a provisional type certificate for the Model HA-420. It is a milestone event for a first time aircraft manufacturer to receive its first type certificate".

Honda Aircraft is targeting final FAA type certification in the next few months, following the completion of final testing and approval by the FAA.

The four HondaJets in the flight test fleet have performed as expected and flown more than 2,500 hours. The flight test program has conducted extensive testing for certification at more than 70 locations in the United States.

The HondaJet is being manufactured at Honda Aircraft Company's world headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina, where aircraft production is underway in preparation for customer deliveries. The final assembly line is full with 12 aircraft and another five are currently in the production flow.

 Honda Aircraft will begin first deliveries after FAA type certification is achieved.
The HondaJet was developed from a clean sheet design and incorporates advanced technologies and innovations. The HondaJet Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration, natural-laminar flow wing and composite fuselage were developed from long-term Honda research activities.

These innovations combine to make the HondaJet the fastest, most spacious and most fuel-efficient jet in its class.

HondaJet is powered by two highly fuel-efficient GE Honda HF120 turbofan jet engines, and is equipped with the most sophisticated glass flight deck featuring a Honda-customized Garmin® G3000 next-generation, all-glass avionics system composed of three 14-inch landscape-format displays and dual touch-screen controllers.

747-8 achieve 330 minute ETOPS

U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved 330-minute Extended Operations (ETOPS) for the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, a first for four-engine airplanes.

nEUROn complete French flight trials


With the completion of its 100th flight in February, the European nEUROn Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) technology demonstrator has completed its test campaign in France.

The demonstrator has been flying since December 1 2012. Further evaluations will take place in Italy and then in Sweden.

The program is led by Dassault Aviation as prime contractor under the authority of French defense procurement agency DGA. It federates expertise from across Europe, consisting of French industrial firms Thales and EADS France, Saab (Sweden), EAB (Greece), Alenia (Italy), RUAG Aerospace (Switzerland) and EADS CASA (Spain).

The nEUROn, in full stealth configuration, was operated by Dassault. In the first phase, the purpose of the tests was to open the flight envelope (including with weapon bay doors open), to test the electro-optical sensor and to evaluate datalink performance.

In the second phase, most flights were dedicated to infrared and electromagnetic signature/detection confrontations against operational systems.

Stealth-related data and feedback will serve as a reference for future aircraft projects.

The nEUROn program is designed to validate the development of complex technologies representing all mission systems: high-level flight control and stealth, launching real air-to-ground weapons from an internal bay, integration in the C4I environment, innovative industrial collaboration processes, etc.

The demonstrator reportedly measures 10 m long, 12 m wide and weighs 5 tons. It is powered by a single Rolls Royce Adour turbofan engine, which powered the Anglo-French SEPECAT Jaguar fighter.

Boeing announce improvements to 777


Boeing marketing vice-president Randy Tinseth, unveiled a series of product improvements to the 777 widebody jetliner at the ISTAT Americas conference on 9 March.

The improvements are aimed to win more orders, so as to keep the 777 assembly line running at full rate, for a smooth transition to 777X.

Any further cuts in the 777s current 100 per year rate could make it harder for Boeing to ramp up production of the 777X.

The product improvements will be available on the 777-300ER, the 777-200LR and the 777 Freighter variants.

The baseline engine, airplane weight and aerodynamic improvements will be phased into production by the third quarter of 2016, lowering trip fuel use by 2 percent. Along with the priced optional features, airlines will see an approximate 5 percent overall fuel use per seat improvement.

GE will provide combination of various improvements to the GE90 engine.

Weight reductions:

Optimized interior structural crown architecture, low density hydraulic fluid, lightweight insulation and tail skid removal— all resulting in a 1,200 lb. weight reduction.

Aerodynamic improvements:

Divergent trailing edge- A trailing edge device is added to the underside of the wing, outboard of the aileron. The profile of the device increases camber of the outboard wing, resulting in outboard wing efficiency.

Elevator trim bias and seal optimization- Elevator seals are improved to reduce drag and the pitch trim software logic is revised, enabling the elevator to augment the stabilizer trim during cruise flight, reducing profile and induced drag.


Slat enhancement- The slat trailing edge is made 60 percent thinner, resulting in lower drag.

Flap fairing optimization- The inboard flap track fairing is revised to optimize span-loading and reduce profile drag.

Window excrescence drag reduction- A new passenger window and seal design will result in greater flushness with the fuselage skin, reducing excrescence drag.

Tailskid deletion- Enhanced tail skid protection is integrated into the fly-by-wire control laws, eliminating the need for a physical tailskid on the 777-300ER.

Optional priced features:

Options such as next-generation lightweight galleys, space-saving lavatories and straightened aft seat tracks will improve fuel efficiency even more through the addition of seats (up to 14 seats, depending on the configuration).

Optional passenger experience upgrades include premium window shades, an LED lighting system to provide better quality of lighting, forward cabin noise improvements and an enhanced Door 2 entry.
GE is also considering an engine retrofit package for in-service airplanes.

The 777X, slated for deliveries from 2020, will feature new engines, new composite wings, and use technologies from the Boeing 787.

USAF to move 18 A-10s to Backup Inventory

US Air Force, with congressional authorization, will convert 18 primary combat-coded A-10 Thunderbolt II ground support aircraft from active units and place them into Backup-Aircraft Inventory (BAI) status with the possibility to convert another 18 at a later date in fiscal year 2015.
